As of May 30, 70 percent of Saskatchewan’s crop was in the ground, according to the province’s agriculture department.

That trails the five-year (2006-10) average for this time of year of 81 per cent seeded.

Last year, 59 percent of the crop was seeded at this time.

Good progress was made in western and northern regions in the last week of May, but activity was curtailed in eastern and southern regions by rain and wet fields.

Since April 1, many areas of the south and east have recorded more than eight inches of rain, with some more than 10 inches.

However, the northwest part of the grainbelt has received less than normal accumulations.

The southeast reports 32 percent seeded, the southwest 64 percent, the east-central 64 percent, the west-central 92 percent, the northeast 93 percent and the northwest 93 percent seeded, the department said.

Sixty-seven per cent of the oilseeds, spring cereals and pulse crops are behind normal in development. Fifty-one per cent of the winter cereals are at normal stage of development for this time of year. The majority of crops that have emerged are in fair to good condition.
