The Alberta government has fired up its Choice Matters website again, in time for this year’s Canadian Wheat Board election. The site is designed to provide farmers with information on wheat and barley pricing, studies on various grain marketing systems and trade issues. It also leaves no doubt that the government and the council, favour eliminating the CWB’s single desk sales desk.”Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development is of the view that Alberta producers and shippers of wheat and barley products should be free to sell their grain and products to whomever they wish,” it states.Choice Matters was launched in 2006 prior to that year’s CWB election by the Alberta Grains Council (ABC), which advises the minister of agriculture on agriculture policy issues. The site functions only during CWB election periods.ABC chair Greg Porozni said the site is designed to make sure growers are informed about marketing issues as they vote for CWB directors. He said the provincial government and the council believe farmers should be free to sell wheat and barley on the open market. He added neither the council nor the website will endorse individual candidates or slates of candidates.”We’re just going to remain neutral when it comes to who you should vote for,” he said. The provincial governments of Saskatchewan and Manitoba have given no indication they intend to get involved in the CWB election.
