WICHITA, Kan., May 3 (Reuters) – Oklahoma’s 2017 average winter wheat yield is projected at 33.7 bushels per acre (bpa), an official with the industry group Plains Grains said on Wednesday.

The estimate is down 13.6 percent from the state’s official 2016 yield of 39.0 bpa, which was a record high, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Production in Oklahoma, typically the No. 2 or No. 3 U.S. winter wheat state, was forecast at 100.1 million bushels, based on harvested acreage of 2.98 million acres, said Mark Hodges, executive director of Plains Grains.

Last year the state produced 136.5 million bushels of winter wheat from 3.5 million harvested acres.

Hodges shared the figures with scouts on the Wheat Quality Council’s annual Kansas crop tour on Wednesday.
