A Calgary-based energy company has had its mineral surface lease cancelled because of failure to protect ferruginous hawks.
Crew Energy Inc. was ordered Sept. 19 to stop operating an oil well near Suffield, Alta., and reclaim the site due to violations under the public lands act.
The provincial environment department found that Crew did not have the required 1,000 metre setback between its well and active hawk nests.
In addition, it found the energy company did not complete a wildlife survey comprehensive enough to identify a hawk nest near its oil well site.
Crew has been ordered to submit a plan to Alberta Environment for restoration of the site to its original condition and submit a report when that is complete.
