In South Korea’s ‘apple county’, farmers beg not to be sacrificed for US trade deal

South Korean apple farmers, who account for about a third of the roughly 14,000 households in the sleepy rural area of Cheongsong county, worry that their way of life could be under threat from an influx of cheap U.S. imports.

The facility will feature a high-speed, 17,500 bushel per hour unloading system and serve as a delivery point for Northstar’s Star Growers Premium Priced Contracts,.

“We are excited to add a greater level of convenience for our Canadian growers, so they may contract to Northstar Agri Industries and not have to personally deal with the document preparation, road restrictions and inspections that go along with delivering across the border,” said Derek MacLean, grain originator for the company’s Canadian operations.

“Winkler is an ideal location for Canadian canola growers. We look forward to working with our Canadian canola partners, and we feel this new facility will increase the canola being delivered from Canada to our Hallock processing plant.”

The Hallock facility is a fully integrated processing and refining plant with a processing capacity of 1,400 tonnes per day and storage for 830,000 bu. It has been in operation since May of 2012 and produces food-grade canola oil and meal.
