Another case of porcine epidemic diarhhea was confirmed in Ontario on June 4 in Middlesex County on a farrow to finish operation.

The last confirmed case of the potentially fatal virus was April 30 in the same county according to Ontario Pork. There have been 59 cases in Ontario. There have been two positives in Manitoba with the last reported case on May 9.

In the United States more diagnoses were confirmed in the last week with 142 new cases reported. There are now 7,111 confirmed cases in the U.S. involving more than 4,700 farms in 30 states. During the world pork expo, U.S. secretary of agriculture Tom Vilsack announced PED and deltacoronavirus are now federally reportable diseases.

The disease does not harm humans but it is nearly always fatal for nursery pigs. It is spread primarily by contact with feces with the most common sources coming from pigs, trucks, boots, clothing, or other things that can physically move it. Strict biosecurity measures are advised to reduce the risk of transmission.
