Risk of listeria contamination has generated several food recalls within the past week. A variety of whole-grain snack bars are affected.

Atkins brand bars containing sunflower seeds and Kashi brand Trail Mix Whole Grain Bars are subject to recall.

As well, Bounce brand Apple Cinnamon Protein Punch Energy Balls and some Basse brand and President’s Choice products containing sunflower seeds have also been recalled.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said June 6 that the Kashi company voluntarily issued a recall on its Trail Mix Whole Grain Bars in the 210 gram package and its Whole Grain Bars in the 630-gram package due to risk of listeria monocytogenes.

The bars were distributed nationally.

The Atkins products, voluntarily recalled by Atkins Nutritionals, include the Atkins Day Break chocolaty hazelnut, cranberry almond and chocolaty chip granola bars in various package sizes.

The bars appear to have been distributed in most provinces, possibly nationally, according to the CFIA.

The energy balls, voluntarily recalled by Natural High Co., and distributed nationally, include the apple cinnamon flavours in the 42-gram bars and 42-gram, 12-bar package.

Recalled products distributed and now voluntarily recalled by Basse Freres Alimentation Oriental include the following President’s Choice items: Mountain Trail Mix in the 325-gram package and Roasted Sunflower Seeds, both salted and unsalted, in the 400 gram package.

Basse products subject to recall include: unsalted sunflower seed kernels in the 230 gram, 454 gram and 1.65 kilogram packages, Hicking Trail Mix in the six kg size and salad topper in the 425 gram size.

The CFIA said no illnesses have been reported in connection with any of these recalls. It is conducting investigations on all cases.

The recalled products should not be eaten and should be discarded or returned to place of purchase.

Eating food contaminated with listeria can cause nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
