XL Foods Inc. has announced it will permanently close its beef plant in Moose Jaw, Sask.
On Aug. 13, the company said it served notice to employees at XL Beef that the plant will be closed within 90 days.
Brian Nilsson, co-chief executive officer of XL, cited business and economic reasons in a news release.
“The market conditions and the fact that we cannot get a viable collective bargaining agreement to allow us to operate the facility have caused us to make this decision,” he said.
Production will continue at XL’s Alberta and U.S. plants.
About 200 locked out workers have now been permanently laid off.
The facility was originally closed in early 2009. Employees were expected to return to work in the fall that year, but a labour-management dispute erupted and the company locked out employees.
