WINNIPEG — Spring seeding is 50 to 60 per cent complete across Manitoba, according to the latest report from Manitoba Agriculture, with relatively warm and dry conditions during the week ended May 15 helping producers make good progress in most areas.
Planting progress is most advanced in central Manitoba, while the western part of the province still has the furthest to go.
Topsoil moisture levels are drying down, with some light textured soils now at the point where they could use some rain to help with germination, according to the report.
Early seeded cereals are emerging, while farmers are reportedly making good progress planting canola, peas, and soybeans in many areas. Corn seeding ranges from 60 to 100 percent complete.
However, winter wheat fields in the eastern and Interlake regions will require reseeding with spring crops.
Hay and pastures are growing slowly, while livestock water availability is considered good.
