Winnipeg, June 23 – Growing conditions were generally favourable for many crops in Manitoba during the week ended June 22, the latest crop report from Manitoba Agriculture said.

However, there are some areas in the northwest and north Interlake regions that could use rain, as a lack of moisture is putting stress on some crops.

Thundershowers during the week brought up to 25 millimetres of raine in some parts of the southwest, northwest, central and eastern regions.

Temperatures dropped to near zero Celsius in some parts of the southwest earlier in the week. But the cooler temperatures likely did not damage crops as they were accompanied by heavy dew and fog, the report noted.

Canada says Australia has re-opened market access for beef and beef products

Australia has lifted a 22-year-old ban on the import of Canadian beef and beef products, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

Most regions also saw the arrival of beneficial warmer daytime weather, which helped forage and annual crops advance more rapidly.

Farmers continued to apply herbicides during the week, with fungicide applications also ongoing to manage leaf diseases and fusarium head blight in spring and winter wheat fields.

Flea beetles that were causing a lot of damage to canola crops earlier in the spring have become less of a concern, as canola is at a more advanced growth stage and growing conditions have improved, the report added.

Farmers are also haying when the weather conditions allow.
