Manitoba crop report shows promising harvest

Southwest

Temperatures above 30 Celsius during the last 10 days of August have helped ripen oilseed crops. Most canola fields are showing seed colour change. Swathing is well underway. Flax crops are ripening quickly.

Winter wheat harvest is nearly complete. Growers have reported average to above average yields.

Growers have noticed grasshoppers throughout the region, particularly in the eastern half.

Central

Winter wheat harvest is progressing. Yields range from 50 to 100 bu. per acre. Protein content is high, around 11 percent in the higher yielding crops.

Alberta Crop Report: Rains in the south, dryness in the north

Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.

Spring cereals harvest has started, with growers reporting very good yields. Spring wheat yields are 50to 80 bu. per acre. Barley is 80 to 110 bu. per acre.

Oat harvest just underway. Yields range from 100 to 140 bu. per acre.

Northwest

Overall crop conditions rated as 85 percent good to fair. Canola has finally finished flowering and swathing has begun. Soybeans and corn are maturing thanks to the late summer heat wave.

Native hay harvest is progressing. Yields are average to below average. Pastures are beginning to dry out. Dugout levels are adequate.

Eastern

Winter wheat harvest is complete. Producers have moved on to spring cereals. Growers are reporting winter wheat yields of 70 to 80 bu. per acre, spring wheat of 45 to 60, barley 85 bu. per acre and oats 100 to 125 bu. per acre.

Early canola fields are going at 40 bu. per acre.Winter feed supplies rated as adequate.

Interlake

Soybean crops in southern Interlake look promising.  With late season heat, soybeans may go 45 to 50 bu. per acre. Growers continue to report white mould and bacterial blight on beans.

Canola harvest has started. Early yields are 38 to 50 bu. per acre. Oat crop is excellent. Yields range from 120 to 130 bu. per acre with heavy test weights.
