Jack Layton has announced he is temporarily stepping down as NDP leader following a diagnosis of a new type of cancer.
Layton said he underwent tests at a Toronto hospital where doctors told him they discovered a new, non-prostate cancer.
He did not specify the cancer type.
In 2010, Layton revealed he was being treated for prostate cancer, but that has been ruled out in this instance.
The party is expected to choose an interim leader until Layton can return to work. Layton has suggested Nycole Turmel, MP for Hull-Aylmer, who is presently chair of the party’s parliamentary caucus be named.
