The 36th Cairns Group ministerial meeting in Saskatoon marks the first time group members have discussed ways scientific innovations and rules-based trade have the potential to meet global food security objectives.
At a press conference today, Gerry Ritz, federal agriculture minister, said members are in agreement that food production must be doubled in the next 40 years to keep up with global food demand.
Unfortunately, agricultural innovations that can help food production shortages are being met with resistance in today’s trade environment.
“In the coming months, we will be working with the Cairns group on recommendations to address trade distorting measures that can affect food security,” said Ritz.
They will be presented at the December World Trade Organization ministerial meeting, he said.
The ministers also discussed bringing the 10 year Doha round of global trade discussion to a conclusion by this year end.
Craig Emerson, trade minister for Australia, said that the Doha round would not be completed this year.
