Livestock price insurance program forms are now available from the federal government for cattle and hog producers in the four western provinces.
The program, announced in January, is designed to help western Canadian cattle and hog producers manage unexpected market price declines. Cattle producers can insure calves, feeders or fed cattle and/or select basic protection on fed cattle. Deadline to buy calf insurance is May 29.
Hog price insurance offers coverage based on current market conditions in Western Canada.
Agriculture Canada said in today’s news release that Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation will be the central administrative body for the program. It has been operating a livestock insurance program in Alberta for several years.

Greater feed efficiency in calves possible through controlled creep feeding
Gerard Roney, founder of Advantage Feeders in Australia, spoke at Ag in Motion 2025 about using controlled creep feeding to develop a calf’s rumen, allowing for better uptake of energy and protein at a younger age.
Federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz encouraged participation.
“This spring, western cattle and hog producers are encouraged to make livestock price insurance an integral part of their business plans,” he said in a news release.
Manitoba agriculture minister Ron Kostyshyn, Saskatchewan agriculture minister Lyle Stewart, Alberta agriculture minister Verlyn Olson and British Columbia agriculture minister Pat Pimm all expressed their support for the program.
“I would encourage cattle and hog producers to look closely at this program and see whether it can be a part of their risk management strategy. Producers can visit their local Saskatchewan Crop Insurance office to learn more and get started,” said Stewart.
Added Pimm: “This insurance means cattle and hog producers can be prepared for price fluctuations and is something all ranchers should give serious thought to including in their business plans.”
Producers will fund premiums, and program administration is covered by the federal and provincial governments through Growing Forward 2.
