The annual Alberta highway cleanup has been postponed until May 14 due to challenges presented by the fire in Fort McMurray.

The event is traditionally held on the first weekend of May, when 4-H club members and various groups clean highway ditches as a way to raise money while also beautifying roadsides.

The Alberta government said in a news release that resources to protect public safety are being concentrated on Fort McMurray, where a massive fire continues to rage and 80,000 people have been displaced.

The government typically provides safety support and collection of the garbage gathered during the highway cleanup.
