Fire bans and restrictions are in place for much of southern Alberta amid pervasive hot, dry weather.

The provincial government issued fire restrictions July 7 for the Calgary Forest Area, the region south from the Red Deer River, along the Rockies and foothills to the northern boundary of Waterton Lakes National park.

Open fires are banned on private land, the back country and non-designated camping sites until further notice. All fire permits have been suspended.

People who burn fires during a fire restriction may be subject to fines of $287, a government news release said.

A map of fire bans is available on the internet at albertafirebans.ca.

As of July 10, it showed bans in the summer villages of Waiparous and Ghost Lake, both west of Calgary, as well as in Lethbridge County and the Municipal District of Taber. Fire restrictions are in place at many other regions of southern Alberta.
