The federal government announced Tuesday that Quantum Genetics Canada Inc. will receive $750,000 funding.

The money will be used to help the company commercialize new genetic technology to more feedlot operators in North America.

The core of this new innovation is DNA testing.

A sample of the each animal is taken at the feedlot. The genetic material is sent to Quantum Genetics where it is analyzed along with other genetic information, such as the animal’s body fat.

The information is then entered in a computerized system and the animals are placed into categories for slaughtering purposes.

Feedlot operators can then use the information to regulate feeding schedules to maximize animal growth and fat content making the feedlots more efficient. The technology will also allow feedlot operators to send animals to slaughter in top physical condition.

Canadian feedlots are expected to see as much as $8 million in benfits during the next five years due to feed efficiency and by creating cattle with higher value through marbling and tenderness.

The repayable loan is expected to create 30 new jobs in Saskatchewan.
