Alberta sheep and lamb producers have until March 31 to apply for reimbursement on electronic tag costs.

The radio frequency identification tag incentive program ended Nov. 30, but producers can apply for repayment of up to $3 per tag on lambs born between Dec. 1, 2010, and Nov. 30, 2012, that were given an RFID tag.

The program “is intended to encourage the Alberta sheep industry’s transition to radio frequency identification ear tags as their primary means of animal identification,” said an Alberta Lamb Producers news release.

The tags are designed to allow better traceability and, if used with record-keeping programs, can also improve flock management.

Producers who meet the requirements of purchasing approved tags and applying them to lambs must apply if they want reimbursement.

Forms and information are available on the ALP website at www.ablamb.ca.
