Lethbridge County has approved a controversial new charge on livestock in the region.
The county council approved a measure that will see a $3 per animal unit charge, which is expected to be included on residents’ tax notices in May.
The measure is expected to raise about $6.1 million over two years to help pay for road and bridge repair.
Lethbridge County, commonly known as feedlot alley, is known for its high density cattle feeding operations.
Feedlot operators have previously expressed concerns that a tax this high would drive many of them to move.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
