Canadian National Railway and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, which represents locomotive engineers, will meet tomorrow to try to resolve outstanding issues and avoid a strike.

Yesterday, the Teamsters gave CN 72 hours strike notice after negotiations broke off last week over disagreement on wages and the number of miles engineers can log each month.

Both sides said they hoped they could avoid a strike.

Earlier this week, CN said it planned to unilaterally increase the monthly mileage cap to 4,300 miles from 3,800 so that engineers are on the same footing as conductors.

It also said it would raise wages by 1.5 percent.

The union disagrees with the mileage cap increase, saying it raises safety concerns and could lead to layoffs.

A strike or lockout would impede the movement of grain and other goods.
