Cheese from Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm, distributed in British Columbia and Alberta, is suspected of bacterial contamination that has killed one person and made at least 10 others ill.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall of the cheese yesterday, warning the public of possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination in a range of products from the Salmon Arm, B.C.-based cheese farm.

The recall applies to all sizes of cheese packages that were distributed to retail stores in Alberta and B.C. and through internet sales from May 27 to Sept. 14.

The cheese may also have been sold via clerk-served deli counters in both provinces.

“Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the affected product are advised to contact their retailer,” said the CFIA in a news release.

The CFIA recall involves 14 Gort’s products. The list could be expanded, depending on further investigations.

More information and photos of the cheese packaging are available on the CFIA website under Food Recalls.

E. coli 0157:H7 can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include stomach pain and diarrhea.
