Chatenay appointed to Farm Products Council

For 10 years, Jim Chatenay sat on the board of the Canadian Wheat Board as an elected director stanchly opposed to the board’s monopoly.Now, he will oversee the supply management monopoly.For 28 months beginning Aug. 24, the retired Penhold, Alta., rancher will be a member of the national Farm Products Council of Canada that oversees the supply management monopoly that exists in poultry and egg sectors.Agriculture minister Gerry Ritz announced the appointment in June.”With his substantial agricultural background, including his decade-long experience as a Canadian Wheat Board director, Mr. Chatenay will be a great addition to the council,” Ritz said.He also re-appointed Abbotsford, B.C., broiler and dairy operator Ed De Jong for another three year term.Chatenay has no experience in the supply-managed sector.However, the FPCC also administers the Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency and Chatenay has a long association with the Alberta Charolais industry, including six years as a director of the Alberta Charolais Association.Ritz recently appointed former Canadian Federation of Agriculture president and strong supply management supporter Laurent Pellerin as chair of the FPCC.
