Cargill announced Tuesday it will get out of its majority ownership of fertilizer maker Mosaic.
Cargill said it would dispose of its 64 percent stake, worth about $24 billion, dispersing its shares to Cargill shareholders and debtholders.
Cargill said it would allow it to pay down debt and focus on its main agricultural businesses.
The move might put Mosaic into play, with BHP Billiton or Vale as potential suitors.
Mosaic has potash mines at Belle Plaine, Colonsay and Esterhazy in Saskatchewan as well as in New Mexico and Michigan. It has phosphate mines in Florida and Louisiana.
It also has phosphate production in Brazil, Argentina and China.
