Canola continues to fall

Published: December 27, 2013

Canola contracts hit fresh lows today, falling $4.10 per tonne on the ICE Futures Canada exchange.

March canola futures settled at $437.90 per tonne on a day with low trading volumes. Market watchers attributed the canola losses to soybean declines from yesterday, when the Winnipeg market was closed for Boxing Day.

Soybeans bounced back today after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced larger than expected U.S. export sales. Net sales of 720,000 tonnes for the 2013-14 crop year were up 74 percent from the previous weekly report.

Canada eyes Mercosur trade pact to reduce U.S. reliance, minister says

Canada’s International Trade Minister said on Thursday that there was interest from both sides to advance trade talks with South American bloc Mercosur, as Ottawa seeks new deals in a push to diversify from the U.S.

March soybeans in Chicago gained 8.5 cents on the news to close at $13.1375.

Corn exports also beat expectations for the weekly report as the USDA reported net sales of 1.48 million tonnes for 2013-14.

Corn futures gained 1.25 cents on the export data, settling at $4.275.

Corn gains were tempered when news broke that China rejected a 2,000 tonne shipment of dried distillers grain from the United States Dec. 23. After testing the corn byproduct, Chinese inspectors detected the presence of MIR 162, a genetically modified corn variety that is unapproved in China. Earlier this month, China rejected a DDG shipment of approximately 500,000 tonnes.

Industry analysts are speculating that China may purchase more soybean meal as an alternative to DDGs from the U.S.

The USDA said wheat export sales were 596,900 tonnes in its report, beating forecasts. Wheat contracts fell in Minneapolis and Kansas City, despite the positive news.

Wheat continued its December plunge, with hard red spring wheat futures in Minneapolis losing 3.5 cents to settle at $6.3475 per bu. Minneapolis wheat has hit a contract low for 15 of the last 16 trading sessions. The nearby March contract has fallen 10 percent since the beginning of December.

A cold snap is expected to hit the U.S. Plains next week, but snow cover should protect the dormant crop from damage.

Oats gained 3.25 cents on the day to settle at $3.56 per bu. Oat futures have gained about 30 cents per bu. in December.

The loonie fell .69 cents today, which may have provided support for canola futures. Currency analysts are expecting the Bank of Canada to keep interest rates low until the end of 2015. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve is now tapering its bond-buying program, reducing the amount of money it injects into the U.S. economy.

The loonie closed at 0.9348 US, down from 0.9417 Dec. 24.
