A $54,000 investment from the federal government will help canaryseed growers in Saskatchewan boost their yields and sales, say officials.

Agriculture minister Gerry Ritz made the announcement today as members of the Canaryseed Development Commission of Saskatchewan met in Saskatoon as part of Crop Production Week.

The event runs for the rest of the week.

“Previous research has shown a big benefit for many canaryseed crops from the application of chloride fertilizer as potassium chloride (potash),” said Kevin Hursh, CDCS executive director.

“This federal support is critical to helping fine-tune fertilizer recommendations based on how much chloride is present in a field as measured by a soil test.”

The CDCS was formed in 2006 to co-ordinate research and market expansion of the crop, which is used in feed for caged and wild birds.

The project will be funded from the federal government’s Agricultural Innovation Program.
