Canadians do well with Red Angus at National Western Stock Show

DENVER, Colo. — Canadian Red Angus breeders made their mark at the 110th National Western Stock Show held Jan. 9-24.

At the Red Angus show held Jan. 11, grand champion female banner went to Kevin Blair of Blairs.Ag Cattle Company of Lanigan, Sask., with Red Bar EL Kassie 129B. Blair purchased this female as a calf from Bar EL Angus of Stettler, Alta., last year.

Blair also won the junior champion bull award with Red Six Mile Signature 295B, owned with Six Mile Angus of Fir Mountain, Sask., as well as the champion junior bull calf ribbon for Damar Power Eye C501.

Australia nears breakthrough canola deal with China, sources say

Canberra is close to an agreement with Beijing that would allow Australian suppliers to ship five trial canola cargoes to China, sources familiar with the matter said, a move towards ending a years-long freeze in the trade.

Northline Angus of Ardrossan, Alta., won intermediate bull with Red NL GAF Crush.

The champion junior heifer calf went to Clayton and Corrine Gibson of Six Mile Angus, while the reserve went to Dave Babitz of Rainbow Red Angus of Cherhill, Alta. Named Red Rainbow Lark, this female was sold earlier at the 2015 Canadian Western Agribition to Top Line Farms of Illinois and Mid Continent Farms of Kansas.

The grand champion Red Angus bull was Red Six Mile Taurus 519A, owned by David Spencer of J-6 Inc. of Gibbon, Nebraska. This bull, bred by Six Mile, was also the 2014 grand champion at Denver. It was sold to Spencer at the Six Mile sale in April 2014 for a half possession, half semen interest for $55,000.

Also, a first place nod went to Dave Longshore of Bar EL Angus for a February bull calf named BAR-E-L High Tide 63C.

The Gelbvieh show was also held Jan. 11.

Scott Severtson of Innisfail, Alta., won the senior champion bull award with SLC Swagger 105A. This bull was the Canadian national champion in 2015, and a half interest has been sold to Mexico.

Severtson also had the first place spring heifer calf with SLC Lady 12C.
