A Canadian Maine Anjou bull was named reserve grand champion at the recent National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado.

Owned by Deagle Cattle Co. of Consort, Alta., the 2009 bull was bred and raised at SW Cattle Co. owned by Shawn Wilson of Strathmore, Alta.

Named SW Serious Money 920W, the bull was purchased by Rick and Marilynn Deagle in 2010 from the Wilsons.

The Deagles have been in the Maine Anjou business since 2000 and have 500 cows at their Consort ranch. This was their first win at the Denver show, but Rick Deagle felt confident as he watched his bull stand at the front of the line.

The Canadians placed well throughout.

“The mass of these bulls don’t take a second seat to anybody,” he said.

“They are the kind of cattle people need. They have the depth and the thickness.”

Working with the Wilsons, he sells 70 to 80 purebred and percentage Maine Anjou bulls every March.

The reserve senior Maine Anjou bull in Denver came from Shawn’s father, Bill Wilson, also from Strathmore, and is owned jointly with Citation Farms in Saskatchewan. This bull was also reserve grand champion Maine Anjou at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina last year.
