The federal government is providing $15 million to the Canadian International Grains Institute to help the Winnipeg based organization market Canadian crops around the globe.

“We welcome today’s significant investment, which demonstrates a continuing commitment to the work that we do on behalf of farmers and industry,” said JoAnne Buth, CIGI chief executive officer, in a statement released this morning.

“It will enable us to promote Canadian field crops and the Canada brand for quality and consistency worldwide through our educational programs and technical training.”

The federal government said the funding would strengthen the “competitive advantage for Canadian field crops,” through crop missions, educational programs and technical exchanges.

CIGI operates a grain and pulse testing lab, mill, bakery and pasta processing plant in downtown Winnipeg.

The knowledge gained from that research allows CIGI to educate global customers on the benefits of Canadian grains and tailor domestic grain production for international markets.

The federal government, Canadian farmers and the grain industry fund CIGI’s efforts.
