The federal government says it will announce “significant positive news” about trade on Friday.
The speculation is that the news is about its WTO complaint regarding U.S. country of origin labeling rules.
Agriculture minister Gerry Ritz and international trade minister Ed Fast will be in Airdrie, Alta., on Friday for the announcement.
Representatives from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, the Canadian Pork Council and the Canadian Meat Council will attend.
The COOL regulations that came into force in 2008 significantly cut into exports of Canadian meat to the United States.
Canada challenged COOL rules as a contravention of World Trade Organization rules. Mexico joined Canada in the challenge.
