Missy, a Holstein owned in part by three Alberta operations, has been named 2012 cow of the year by Holstein Canada.
The cow, whose full name is Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy, won over three other animals in a competition that gained the largest number of votes in the event’s 17-year history.
Missy has become well known in dairy circles as “the million dollar cow” with superior conformation, production, genetic merit and show ring success.
She is owned by Morsan Farms Ltd. of Ponoka, Alta., Van Ruinen Dairy Ltd. of Lacombe, Alta., Gert Andreasen of Ponoka, Alta., and Mark Butz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

CFIA says regulatory changes will cut agricultural red tape
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is set to make seven regulatory changes to cut red tape around agricultural production.
The title was conferred yesterday at the annual meeting of Holstein Canada in Niagara Falls, Ont.
The win is the crowning achievement in an already illustrious career for Missy, said a Holstein Canada news release, adding the animal is an ambassador for the dairy industry.
“We are very pleased that this is a breeder voted decision and it is great to see all the support from so many on Missy,” said Greg Thalen on behalf of Morsan Farms, in a news release.
“We had obviously seen the support in the past in the sale of her daughters, and watching so many participate at auctions is a very good indicator of the support of the breeders.”
