Two Alberta cheese makers have been short listed for the Canadian Grand Prix cheese competition.
Sylvan Star Cheese of Sylvan Lake, Alta., won second and third place in the Gouda category with its Grizzly Gouda and Aged Gouda. Its Natural Smoked Gouda came second in the flavoured cheese with added non-particulate flavouring category and its Italian Herbs Spiced Gouda came first in the flavoured cheese with added particulate solids and flavouring category.
Latin Foods Inc. of Calgary won first place in the fresh cheese with grilling properties with its Quesno Fresco Cheese. This was a new category added this year. The cheese was judged in its natural form and grilled.

Cheese makers from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island submitted 225 cheeses in 19 categories.
Judges observed, touched, smelled and tasted each cheese and evaluated them based on specific criteria including flavour, texture and body, colour, appearance and salt content.
The competition is sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada as a way of celebrating Canadian cheese made from Canadian milk.
