Ag Canada lowers wheat production number

Winnipeg – Canadian wheat production for the current crop year (2018/19) is down compared to last month’s estimates, according to updated supply/demand tables from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, released on Aug. 17.

Agriculture Canada’s market analysis branch forecast wheat production at 30.300 million tonnes, which would be down by 300,000 tonnes from the July forecast.

Wheat ending stocks for 2018/19 were also lowered by 300,000 tonnes, to 5.500 million. That compares with the 2017/18 wheat carryout of 6.100 million tonnes.

Canola production and ending stocks estimates for the 2018/19 crop year were left unchanged at 20.335 million tonnes and 2.250 million tonnes, respectively.

Most pulse crop supply/demand projections were unchanged from last month’s numbers. However pea estimates were lowered to 3.600 million tonnes from 3.610 million tonnes, while chickpea production numbers were raised to 0.335 million tonnes from 0.235 million tonnes.

Total ending stocks of the major grains and oilseeds for 2018/19 were lowered to 12.420 million tonnes, from an earlier forecast of 13.105 million. Grain and oilseed ending stocks for the 2017/18 marketing year, which ended July 31, were pegged at 14.420 million tonnes.

Total pulse and special crop ending stocks for 2018/19 are now pegged at 1.305 million tonnes, which is down from the July estimate of 1.535 million and the 2017/18 estimate of 1.430 million tonnes.
