Canadian Wheat Board supporters have launched a last-ditch bid to influence voters before the May 2 federal election.

They are running a nation-wide radio advertising campaign urging producers to vote for candidates who support the board.

Regina-area grain farmer Bill Gehl, chair of the CWB Alliance, said the group’s members understand the critical importance of the wheat board to the success of agriculture in the West.

However, he said farmers make up only two percent of the population and are spread out over 57 western constituencies.

“That is why we are using radio and print advertising to appeal directly to voters across the country to support our family farmers,” Gehl said.

“The best way to do that is to vote only for the candidates and parties that support the CWB.”

He said it’s unfortunate that prime minister Stephen Harper has led a persistent attack against the board and single desk marketing.

“As farmers, we have decided to go over the head of the current prime minister and appeal directly to the voters of Canada.”
