Fertilizer issues threaten South American soybean crops

Disruptions in Black Sea potash exports will have little impact in the near-term but could play a significant role in determining the fate of South America’s next soybean crop, according to a report by RaboResearch. All overseas flow of fertilizer for the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere has already taken place. Movement is now […] Read more

Buyers can’t replace Indonesian palm oil shortfall

MUMBAI, April 25 (Reuters) – Global edible oil consumers have no option but to pay top dollar for supplies after Indonesia’s surprise palm oil export ban forced buyers to seek alternatives, already in short supply due to adverse weather and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The move by the world’s biggest palm oil producer to ban […] Read more

EU, Russia expect big wheat crops

The world’s top two wheat exporters will likely have more crop to ship in 2022-23, says an analyst. The European Commission forecasts that the European Union will export a record 40 million tonnes of wheat next crop year. Bilal Muftuoglu, analyst with Argus Media, said the previous record was 36 million tonnes, so that would […] Read more

Feds make lending changes

The federal government and Farm Credit Canada are aware that fertilizer, fuel and feed prices have exploded in the last year. To help producers cover the additional expense, Agriculture Canada and FCC have enhanced their lending programs. In early April, Ag Canada announced changes to the Advance Payments Program and participating farmers will now receive […] Read more

LeftField Commodity Research analyst Jonathon Driedger is forecasting 16 million tonnes of production by the key exporters of the crop — the European Union, Canada, the United States and Mexico. Durum supplies not expected to be excessive

There is very little risk of farmers around the world over-producing durum in 2022-23, and that should keep prices firm, says an analyst. LeftField Commodity Research analyst Jonathon Driedger is forecasting 16 million tonnes of production by the key exporters of the crop — the European Union, Canada, the United States and Mexico. That would […] Read more

World corn supplies were already tight this winter and then Russia invaded Ukraine and the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a report calling for reduced corn acres. That has set the stage for a "possibly explosive" corn market if there are any weather issues, said LeftField Commodity Research analyst Jonathon Driedger. | File photo

Corn holds the key to feedgrain prices

The U.S. corn market will once again be the driving force for Canadian feedgrain prices in 2022-23, says an analyst. World corn supplies were already tight this winter and then Russia invaded Ukraine and the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a report calling for reduced corn acres. That has set the stage for a “possibly […] Read more

Tobacco was planted in a field with heaters set to keep their plants 5C warmer than the ambient temperature. The engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures. The engineered plants also had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures than non-engineered plants. This gave the researchers insight into how to improve the yields of food crops under the same stress. | R.I.P.E./University of Illinois photo

Research lets plants beat the heat

Genetic modifications create synthetic pathways that helps plants fix more CO2 and less of the more yield costly O2

As global warming increasingly threatens crop production, scientists at the University of Illinois and the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, have found a way to safeguard plants against the dangers of heat. Researchers have improved the efficiency of a plant’s photorespiration through bypassing a photosynthetic shortcoming in a particular enzyme found in […] Read more

Clearing bush? Bad Ax bush machine turns trees to pulp

The new Loftness Bad Ax update for skid steer loaders is lighter, stronger, has better balance and features a radial piston high-pressure motor, plus a fully machined 60-inch-diameter disc. Machine balance is a critical safety factor when running bush-clearing disc mulcher. It also affects machine efficiency. The engineers at Loftness figured out how to move […] Read more
