Rivers face increased demand and dwindling water supply

First Nations and sensitive delta environment at highest risk as users scramble for an increasingly limited resource

First Nations in areas such as the Saskatchewan River Delta in northern Saskatchewan near the Manitoba border could face environmental degradation due to lower flows, said Lucas Vonderbank of the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering.

Flea beetles on volunteer canola plant leaves.

Consider moisture before spraying flea beetle

“Canola can take a lot of damage before you actually need to spray. The conditions that make me worried for flea beetles though, are the hot and dry conditions because that makes the flea beetle bites on the plants worse. When it’s hot and dry, the plant can’t compensate for having these holes in it and then the holes lead to increased drying,” said Tyler Wist, an Agriculture Canada research scientist who studies flea beetles.

Waterhemp’s genetic adaptations discovered

Genetic mutations make it possible for the weed to rapidly adapt to agricultural conditions and environmental changes

A single waterhemp plant can grow 2.5 centimetres a day and, in a growing season, each single plant can produce up to 4.8 million seeds.

An open laptop and a smartphone both display the bin inventory system built by Adaptive Agriculture.

Online dashboard simplifies bin management

Tool allows connection to in-bin sensors and control devices for remote management via wi-fi or cellular networks

Saskatoon-based Adaptive Agriculture built a bin inventory system, available through its website, that connects to bin sensors and graphs their readings.
