Much of southern Alberta is in trouble, but the situation is better in Saskatchewan and Manitoba remains a mixed bag

Derek Squair, president of Exceed Grain Marketing, recently completed an extensive crop tour of the province. Squair said it is too early to be making any average yield forecasts because conditions can change in a hurry. He will have a much better idea where things are heading by mid-July.

A bad year for aster yellows?

Aster leafhoppers are responsible for transferring the aster yellows pathogen to canola plants.
 The leafhoppers blow into Western Canada from the United States, and a percentage of the insects come with aster yellows.

You can’t gopher strychnine anymore

James Tansey, Saskatchewan provincial specialist of insect and pest management, said the Saskatchewan government did not support the removal of strychnine and it presented data to the PMRA that showed the product could be used safely and effectively for the control of gophers.

EPA’s renewable fuel rule called ‘missed opportunity’

Clean fuel producers, oilseed processors, fuel distributors and marketers have all made significant investments to grow the industry rapidly over the next several years.
