REGINA — A long-time Shorthorn breeder had the high seller at the breed’s sale held yesterday at Canadian Western Agribition.
Alta Cedar Shorthorns, owned by Peter and Christine Boake of Westerose, Alta., sold a polled heifer for $7,300 to Seymour Hurry of Milton Station, P.E.I.
This calf and its mother won the grand champion female banner at Northlands Farmfair in Edmonton earlier this month.
A solid red bull calf born in March sold for $6,000 to the Sharp family at Lacombe, Alta. The bull came from Uphill Shorthorns at Hamiota, Man.
An unusual offering of six vials of semen came from Pat Butler of Rocky Mountain House, Alta. She sold the semen from a bull born in 1967 named Olive Grove Century. Shane Sawley of Melville, Sask., bought all six vials for $600 each. The bull was one of the first polled herd sires available and produced a number of champions, including the junior and senior Shorthorn champions at the 1974 Agribition.
