CWB has extended to Nov. 9 the deadline for farmers to sign up to the Harvest Pool.

It said this morning that the extension was needed to give farmers more time to adjust to new options and procedures in the new open market.

“Many farmers have told us they want to participate in our pools, but requested more time to confirm grades, obtain additional information on grain company deductions and incentives, and make their decisions,” chief executive officer Ian White said in a news release.

There has been a large number of contract sign-ups in the last few days, he said, but there is still room in the Harvest Pool.

Alberta Crop Report: Rains in the south, dryness in the north

Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.

“We can accommodate the requests for an extension of several days while still protecting returns for those who have already contracted,” White said.

Pooling allows farmers to spreading price risk across a period of many months and can help address both futures and basis price risk.

CWB contracts can be delivered to any grain handling facility, giving farmers the option to negotiate the best deals possible on freight and handling charges.
