The Canadian Grain Commission has announced it is introducing a new food class for barley, Canada Western/Canada Eastern, for 2012-13.

When that class comes into effect July 1, the hulless class for Canada/Western/Canada Eastern barley, will be removed. Under the new class, hulless and covered grades will be included for all food, malting and general purpose barley.

Changes have also been made to how barley is graded, with a revision to the cleaning for grade improvement procedure.

The CGC has also announced other grading changes, taking effect that same day, to Canada Red lentils (new colour definition, new tolerances for copper and bleached seeds and new wrinkled seed tolerances), as well as revised heated tolerances in Canada Eastern feed wheat.

More information is available in the Canadian Grain Commission’s Official Grain Grading Guide.
