Cold winter, low prices make B.C. sale a buyer’s market

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – It was a buyer’s market at the provincial bull sale here March 9.

Prices for 74 yearlings and two-year-old bulls averaged $2,405, down from last year’s $2,719.

Lower prices for commercial cattle and the high feed expense of a long, cold winter affected what commercial ranchers were willing to pay for breeding bulls. Prices ranged from $1,050 to $6,350.

Hereford

Bulls from Trevor and Mary Jolleys, owners of Crowbar Ranch in Keremeos, B.C., swept the trophies, including both grand champion banners, pairs, group of four and get-of-sire classes.

Judge Jim Henderson of Cardston, Alta., selected Crowbar’s two-year-old, Crowbar 4A Hi Power Lad 32D, as grand champion. This entry sold for $6,350 to C.W. Edlund Ranches of Heffley Creek, B.C., to top the sale.

Crowbar 4A Brit Lad 38E, a yearling, was selected as reserve grand champion but did not sell.

Two other Crowbar Ranch two-year-olds were popular with buyers. Moon Ranch from Williams Lake, B.C. selected Crowbar 4A Hi Power Lad 57D for $3,700, and Sather Ranches of Penticton, B.C. bought Crowbar 57A Rustandard Lad 1D for $3,500.

High string average of $3,690 went to Chataway Ranch from Ashcroft, B.C., for five two-year-olds. The string topper, Chataway Mora GE 27Z 10D, sold to Blair Pearl of Clinton, B.C., for $4,600.

Blair also selected a stallmate, Chataway BP 123Y 31D for $3,700. Winfield Ranches from Kelowna, B.C., paid $4,000 to own Chataway BP 134Y 18D.

Cliff Dorin from Springfield Ranch of Williams Lake, B.C. paid $3,700 for Chataway Mora GE 27Z 1D.

The Little Fort Herefords string of six bulls, entered by the Loy Jim family, averaged $3,567. Fred Buckley from Trail, B.C., selected two, including LFH Access 66D for $4,600. J & L Ronayne, Pemberton, selected LFH Storm 9D for $4,000. Winfield Ranches from Winfield, B.C., chose LFH Delta 51D for $3,900.

The Ziemer family of Echo Valley Farm, Lumby, B.C., had a high seller at $4,100 for Echo Valley Prime Driver 37D, which sold to Kevin Foley of Quesnel, B.C.

Angus

Eleven Angus bulls averaged $1,768. Grand champion, Jessi-D Sandybar Madolier 4D, a two-year-old bull consigned by Dave Adams of Jessi-D Farms in Richmond, B.C., sold to Fred Buckley of Trail for $1,400.

The McHaffie family of White Lake Ranch, Kaleden, B.C., won the reserve grand champion banner with White Lake Cornerstone 16E. T6 Ranch of Penticton paid $2,500 to own this yearling and $2,700 for White Lake Triad 6E, a stallmate.

Wayne and Jill Hughes of Tafika Angus, Lumby, received $2,200 for Tafika Double Time 23E, selling to James Anderson of Westbridge, B.C. Hastie Brothers of Surrey, B.C, had a popular entry in Dee Jay Gambler 15D. Tom Hillman of Quesnel, paid $2,000 to own this two year old.
