Canada’s largest, privately owned agribusiness has expanded, acquiring an Alberta grain handling and crop input retail facility owned by Great Northern Grain.
Richardson International Limited is expecting to close the sale on the Nampa, Alta., facility by Feb. 9.
It’s the Winnipeg-based company’s fourth acquisition in the Peace River region in the last two years, joining crop input centres in Falher, Fairview and Manning. Richardson is also constructing a fertilizer storage shed with rail receiving at its facility in Rycroft, Alta.
“The Peace River area is a key production area in Western Canada,” Darwin Sobkow, Richardson’s vice-president for agribusiness operations , said in a news release.

The Nampa facility houses 17,300 tonnes of storage capacity, as well as a full cleaning line for wheat and canola and a 52-car spot on the Canadian National Railway line. Richardson says it will add an additional 14,000 tonnes of grain storage and increase the facility’s rail car spot in the spring to handle 104 cars
The facility also has an 8,400 sq. foot crop protection and seed warehouse for retailing crop input products.
Richardson has more than 1,700 employees across Canada. The company says employees at Great Northern Grain will be able to remain with the facility.
