The people with the power and the money don’t understand rural realities, says the organizer of a conference on rural women’s health.
Saskatoon psychologist Nikki Gerrard said that is one reason why she and others convinced the Centre for Agricultural Medicine to hold a March 26 meeting.
“Women are wanting to talk to each other, hear from each other and learn from each other,” said Gerrard. “But there’s also an action plan to be formed.”
The plan will be used to help form health policy and to lobby the people with power to make changes.
Gerrard said the main issue for rural women is isolation and the corresponding lack of resources. When the nearest hospital is an hour or two away or home care workers are housecleaners, not nurses, it can be a problem for injured or ill people.
