Wiebe appointed

Former National Farmers Union president Nettie Wiebe has been appointed as professor of church and society at St. Andrew’s College in Saskatoon. The term appointment is effective July 1.

Wiebe, who farms near Laura, Sask., has several university degrees, including a doctorate in philosophy.

A St. Andrew’s College news release stated Wiebe is a natural fit with the college mandate of preparing men and women for rural ministry on the Prairies.

“Her name has been associated with St. Andrew’s College and our students over the years, as we have drawn on her background and experience in agricultural issues and various farm crises in many workshops and seminars,” said the release.

College anniversary

The Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph, Ont., celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. U of G is the only university that grew from an agricultural college, said its news release.

Celebrations will include historical displays, concerts, a visiting professor series, art shows, workshops on agri-food topics and a book on the college’s history and research achievements.

The OAC was founded in 1874 by the Ontario government as the Ontario School of Agriculture and Experimental Farm. It was established on a 550-acre farm on the south side of Guelph and had 28 students in its first year.

More than 100 new field crop varieties have since been developed there, along with livestock reproduction technologies and biotechnology initiatives.

Over 125 years, almost 25,000 students have received ag-related degrees from the college.
