WASHINGTON, D.C. (Reuters) – Beef trade between the United States and South Korea will be a key issue as negotiators prepare for U.S. president Barack Obama’s visit with Korean president Lee Myung-bak in Seoul beginning Nov. 8.

A free trade pact between the two countries is stalled over beef and auto trade.

“The president has long said we want to try and address the outstanding issues regarding the FTA in order to bring it forward for approval,” said Mike Froman, an adviser for international economic affairs.

South Korea allows only U.S. beef older than 30 months. The Korean public fears U.S. beef because of worries over BSE.
