StatCan stands by its model-based crop forecast
Statistics Canada’s model-based production estimates are under scrutiny, but agency says it is confident in the results.
The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has created a national youth initiative called the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Development Program.
It offers training and mentorship opportunities to producers aged 18 to 35, which are designed to give them the expertise necessary to sustain the cattle industry.
The Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency has provided $198,900 in funding through its Industry Development Program.
The young leaders program is expected to be rolled out nationally following the completion of a pilot phase in Alberta, which began earlier in July.
Six Alberta producers are taking part in the young leaders pilot, with the Alberta Beef Producers supporting the initiative.
Two types of mentorship opportunities are available:
• The Industry Leader Mentorship Program enables producers to be mentored by beef industry leaders from the CCA, including board members and committee chairs, and participate in CCA committees and conferences.
• The Professional Mentorship Program provides direct mentoring from cattle industry individuals and professionals in a beef-related profession, such as a cattle operator, pharmaceutical representative or veterinarian.
The CCA is looking for partners in the program who would like to offer mentors, mentorship tools or forums that would benefit program participants. For more information, contact Jill Harvie at harviej@cattle.ca or 403-274-5686.

Lamb funding
The federal government is providing up to $178,186 to lamb producers. The investment is designed to help establish the Canadian Lamb Company Initiative, which will focus on developing a stronger lamb industry.
The multiphase project is focused on the development and implementation of a new business and operations model for the lamb industry in Western Canada. A key part of the project will be to establish a panel that includes producers, processors, retailers and distributors.
