The federal government is loaning almost $1 million to a mustard processing plant in southern Saskatchewan.

The money, from two separate government departments, will be used to expand the processing capacity of Mustard Capital Inc. using a new and unique milling technology.

Last week in Vanguard, Sask., MP David Anderson announced funding of $655,000 from Agriculture Canada.

Combined with a $300,000 loan from Western Economic Diversification, announced by Anderson Feb. 16, it produced a total investment of $955,000 in the facility.

MCI began milling operations in 2007 and has sales of around $4.5 million. The company buys yellow, brown and oriental mustard from 250 producers and manufactures products that are sold to customers in about 30 countries.

The expansion is expected to create nine new jobs and triple the plant’s current processing capacity. It is projected that within five years the plant will be processing at least 5,400 tonnes a year of mustard valued at around $9 million, with an economic spinoff estimated at $2.7 million.
