The federal government has announced $170,000 in funding to organic farmers and food processors.The Organic Trade Association (OTA) will receive $118,000 from the federal AgriMarketing program. OTA is expected to use the money to attend international trade shows, develop promotional materials and build a long-term international strategy for the organic sector.The Canadian Organic Growers Association will receive almost $50,000 from the government’s Integrated Food Safety Initiative to develop ways to determine how current on-farm food safety systems can meet the specific needs of organic agriculture.COG’s executive director, Laura Telford, is pleased with the government’s investment in organic agriculture.”This funding will go a long way to enable the organic sector to begin a dialogue with national agricultural commodity groups to customize on-farm food safety programs to meet the specialized needs of organic farmers,” said Telford in a prepared statement.The Canadian organic retail market was valued at close to $2 billion in 2008, up from $1.2 billion in 2006.
