Alberta

South

  • Seeding is completed, except for some alfalfa planting and sloughs.
  • Very high soil moisture levels have moderated in the area south of Taber.
  • Warmer temperatures aided recovery of crops after frost and delayed maturity. Up to 26 millimetres of rain aided drier areas and snow was reported in the Cypress Hills.
  • Pastures are in average condition.
  • Farmers are reseeding crops to replace fall cereals after frost, winterkill and wind erosion.

Central

Northwest

  • Seeding is completed with the exception of low-lying areas. Emergence remains poor. There is frost damage to some emerged crops.

Northeast

  • Seeding is complete.
  • Fall seeded crops remain in poor condition with half showing significant winter damage. Replacement planting of damaged cereals is underway.

Peace and B.C.

  • Surface moisture is generally good with excessive moisture north of Grande Prairie. Above average moisture in many areas.
  • Seeding is about 95 percent complete.

Saskatchewan

Southwest

  • Seeding is complete. Two-thirds of spring crops rated as good and one-third fair. Canola was the exception with half being rated as good and chickpeas at 80 percent good.
  • Pastures behind average.
  • Early emerged crops are subject to some post emergent weed control.
  • Snow reported in the Cypress Hills. Rain showers across the region late in the week; up to 16 mm recorded at Swift Current.
  • Gopher problems near Assinibioa and Swift Current.
  • Flea beetles and grasshoppers reported. Wind-eroded soil damage to canola.

Southeast

  • Crop planting completed.
  • Early seeded crops subject to some frost damage. Weyburn reported -3 C.
  • Some fall seeded crops are being replaced. Some frost damage to early emerging canola.
  • Two-thirds of triticale in poor condition.
  • Pastures average, but delayed in maturity.

West-central

  • Seeding complete. Repeated frosts damaged emerged crops.
  • Drought is serious north of South Saskatchewan River in the Rosetown-Kindersley area. Only 12 percent report topsoil moisture as adequate.
  • 60 percent of winter wheat rated as poor. One-third of spring crops rated good, with remaining fair to poor.

East Central

  • Seeding is about 85 percent complete.
  • Colder than average temperatures are delaying crops. Winter wheat is at the six-leaf stage. Some frost damage to alfalfa.
  • Soil moisture is 90 percent adequate.
  • Hay land generally good.
  • Flea beetles are present.

Northwest

  • Seeding is complete. Cropland moisture is 72 percent adequate with better than average moisture along Highway 16 and near Meadow Lake.
  • Frost damage to early crops reported. Patchy emergence in most spring crops. Two-thirds of spring crops in good condition.
  • Wind damage to canola.

Northeast

  • Seeding is complete with 74 percent moisture being adequate and 24 percent short.
  • Winter crops rated as 97 percent in good condition. More than half of spring crops in good condition but well behind average for development.
  • Some wind and frost damage to canola.

Manitoba

Southwest

  • Seeding is complete on most farms.
  • Early seeded crops have emerged. Some frost damage to canola. Delayed development.
  • Pasture condition is falling due to delayed maturity from cold.
  • Flea beetles are present.
  • Moisture is adequate in most areas and abundant between Darlingford and Cartwright.

Southeast and Red River Valley

  • Seeding is complete, other than in fields still muddy. Rain added to problems with moisture. Area has received up to 150 percent of normal rainfall since May 9.
  • Flea beetles reported. Early stage grasshoppers.
  • Moisture is good to wet in all areas.
  • In eastern areas, winter wheat is being replaced because of winter kill and repeated hard frosts.
  • Pastures in good condition, but delayed.
  • Winter annual weeds flowering. Annual weeds are delayed due to cold.

Central and Interlake

  • Seeding nearing completion, except where muddy. Rain compounding problems for wet areas. The area has received 120 to 150 percent of normal spring precipitation.
  • Condition of fall seeded crops has failed to improve after a slow start to the season.
  • Pastures are generally good, but progressing slowly.
  • Alfalfa damage from frost. Flea beetles in canola.

Northwest

  • Seeding complete except near McCreary, Dauphin and Gladstone.
  • Emerged canola damage from frost.
  • Some early seeded crops have emerged, especially in western regions.
  • Fall seeded crops rated in fair condition.
  • Pastures and hay land progressing slowly; cattle being moved to pasture.
