Construction will begin this spring on an expansion to Viterra’s high throughput elevator at Provost, Alta.

The grain company announced Feb. 6 that the project would increase the location’s rail loading capacity to 112 rail cars from 56. Storage capacity will go up by 12,000 tonnes to 29,300 tonnes.

Bob Miller, the company’s senior vice-president of grain in North America, said the move is part of Viterra’s strategy to move more 100-car trains.

Viterra will have 36 facilities with 100-car loading spots once the expansion is completed later this fall. Canadian Pacific Railway serves the Provost elevator.

“With these improved capacities and operational efficiencies, we are generating value for our farm customers, end use customers and the industry as a whole,” Miller said in a news release.

Viterra made similar improvements at Grenfell, Sask., and Grassy Lake, Alta. last year. It is also building a new terminal at Sexsmith, Alta.
