Plains Livestock Inc., a new locally owned 10,000-head feedlot, has opened north of Porcupine Plain in northeastern Saskatchewan.
The company has begun operations as a custom feedlot, backgrounding and finishing feeder calves, cows and bulls and backgrounding replacement heifers, a company news release said.
There are 12 to 14 full-time employees and four part-time positions. Spinoff employment is expected with trucking, baling, manure removal and silage production.
The feedlot will need 2,000 acres of silage, 3,000 tonnes of straw, 6,000 tonnes of hay and 1.2 million bushels of barley.
The general manager is Richard Wilson, who has managed large feedlots in the Lethbridge area.
Pen size ranges from 70 to 250 head with the option to share space to meet the needs of large and small producers.
Marketing and age verification services are also offered.
